Pecola is the protagonist of the novel The Bluest Eye. She is a very sweet and innocent girl but by the end of the novel she is damaged by violence. Pecola simply is just asking for two things which are for people to love her and for her to disappear when her parents are fighting. None of this comes true and it forced Pocola to distance from the real world and make up a fantasy world to get rid of her pain. In this world she wishes for blue eyes so she can see the world differently. At the end of the book she believes she had blue eyes and this makes her go insane. Pecola is a symbol of the disgust shown towards black people in her neighborhood. Other people also show their hatred towards Pecola by showing their hatred for themselves. Pecola’s ugliness had made other people feel better about themselves like Geraldine and Maureen and this makes them speak up about Pecola.
Claudia MacTeer
Claudia is the narrator of the novel The Bluest Eye. Claudia is just like Pecola because she also grieves about her beauty but she has a loving and steady family. Claudia is a very strong and brave girl because she is always standing up for Pecola. Claudia shows people that most black families are not like Pecola’s and that most pull through during hard times just like hers.
Cholly Breedlove
Cholly is a person that sexually abuses Pecola because of the way his past was. Cholly has experienced suffering through his childhood by being left in a junk pile as a baby and by being made fun of from white people. He is capable of doing anything but he is helpless since when he was younger two white men made him join in with sexually abuse however when his father comes he pees in his pants. Basically, Cholly’s life is ruined because of his past and relies on Pecola for his pleasure.
Pauline Breedlove
Pauline is a mother that considers herself to be very ugly. She is helpless since she also believes that white beauty will help lead a happy life. Pauline wants be like white actress on screen but cannot become like them so, she cares about her white family she works in order to one day become like them. This makes her distance from her family and hate Pecola because one day she gets mad at Pecola for spilling something on a white girl and Pauline cared for the white girl than her daughter. Pauline’s life is just like Pecola’s since she also wants to be like white people.
