Scapegoat
Pecola is a scapegoat throughout the whole novel, for example, she gets blamed for dropping a hot pot on a little white girl. Also, her feeling that she is ugly makes other people feel like they are pretty. Since Pecola does not stand up for herself other people think it is ok to say whatever they want to say to her. Everyone else in her neighborhood feels lucky because they did not have to go through what Pecola went through.
Loss of Innocence
Pecola wants to have blue eyes so she can fit in with the society and she can do anything to get them. Later on in the novel Pecola gets raped and more than once, this makes her loss her innocence. She cannot go back in time to prevent this from happening, this is like how she cannot get blue eyes physically but she can get them mentally. This eventually makes her go crazy thinking that she has blue eyes even though she does not and because of this Pecola has lost her childhood.
